What is Wireless Communication? 

Wireless Communication is the transmission of information from one point or node to another without the use of physical conductors. Physical conductors are wires, modems, cables or any physical medium of connections. 

Wireless Communication is now the most used and fast-growing in the communication field. It is basically a type of data communication that is performed and delivered wirelessly making life easier. 

History of Wireless Communication

Since the introduction of smoke signals, flags and flashing mirrors in the pre-historic period, wireless communication has been a part of human life and is continuously evolving. Modern Wireless Communication that is using electrical signals and radio waves for communication has been around us for more than 100 years. 

In 1897, Guglielmo Marconi successfully demonstrated the wireless telegraphy by sending EM waves for a short distance of 100 meters, this demonstration paved the way for radio communication and the term radio was derived from radiant energy.

By the early 1900s, terms-atlantic radio transmission had been established, where Marconi successfully transmitted messages in the form of morse code and since then, the technology related to wireless communication and the wireless system has advanced rapidly and thus enabling transmissions over longer distances at a lower cost with cheaper devices.

Types of Wireless Communication

The various types of wireless communication include: 

1. WLAN (Wi-Fi): Devices such as laptops and mobile phones which use the WLAN, can connect to an access point and access the internet.

2. Bluetooth: This is a low range wireless communication system, which is being used by almost all mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. These devices can be connected to wireless Bluetooth receivers, audio equipment, cameras, etc.

3. Infrared Communication: This uses the infrared waves of the Electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. It is used in remote controls of Televisions, cars, audio equipment, etc.

4. Television and Radio Broadcasting: This is an example of a Simplex Communication System where the information is transmitted only in one direction and all the users receiving the same data. Radio is considered to be the first wireless service to be broadcasted.

5. Satellite Communication: This offers telecommunication (Satellite Phones), positioning and navigation (GPS), broadcasting, internet, etc. Other wireless services like mobile, television broadcasting and other radio systems are dependent on Satellite Communication Systems.

6. Mobile Telephone System (Cellular Communication): The development of mobile cellular devices changed the World. Mobile phones today are not limited to just making calls but are integrated with numerous other features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and FM Radio.

7. Paging: This provides information in the form of messages, it uses the simplex system.

8. Radar: This is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects. It can be used to detect aircraft, ships, spacecraft.

9. Cordless Phones: The cordless handset is powered by a rechargeable battery, which is charged when the handset is stored in its cradle.

10. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): This uses the electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects.

11. Global Positioning System (GPS): This is one of the global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) that provides geolocation and time information to a GPS receiver, anywhere on or near the earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. Obstacles such as mountains and buildings block the relatively weak GPS signals.
