What Are Optical Networks?

Optical Networks are those Telecommunications Networks with very high capacity. They are based on Optical technologies and elements, and are used to map, train, and restore wavelength levels and they are also used in services that are based on wavelength. The features of optical networks along with the recent developments in the Optical and Networking systems using optical sources and devices are also dealt with.

Optical networks are the pillars of the Internet and are an essential component that makes up the physical layer of these networks. Since the physical layer makes up the bottom layer in the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, the performance and security of the physical layer and especially Optical Networks have a very large effect on all the six layers above it.

For example, the channel capacity of the Optical Network would determine the resources that would be available for the encryption processes in the upper layer. The security approach in upper layers is restricted by both the Processing Speed of electronic devices and the capacity availability in the Optical Network.

Great improvements can be achieved in the whole network by increasing the Optical Network’s performance in the arear of Channel Capacity, Data Rate, and Processing Speed. Therefore, the security of the Optical Network has a major impact on the security of the entire Communication System. Since it is basically very risky to develop a security system on top of an existing physical infrastructure that is already under threat, defending against threats to the Optical Network is also an advantage to the security of the upper layer.

Features Of Optical networks

Below are some of the features of Optical Networks:

1. FIber: Fibe Communication is a way of transferring data and information from one area to another by transmitting pulses of light over an optical fiber. The light forms an electromagnetic carrier wave that is built to be able to carry information. Fiber is chosen instead of electrical cabling when you require high bandwidth, immunity or long distance over electromagnetic interference. This kind of communication can forward voice, video, and telemetry over local area networks, Computer Networks, or over very long distances.

2. Laser: Laser communication system is another form of telecommunication that occurs over wireless connections in the atmosphere. Laser communication came up in 1960 and since then many improvements have been made in this area.

3.Multiplexer:  In electronics, a multiplexer or Mux for short, also referred to as a data selector, is a type of device that chooses between lots of analog or digital signals that are entered into it and then sends it to a single output line.

4. Demultiplex:  Demultiplex (DEMUX) is the opposite or reverse of the Multiplexer (MUX) process. It combines lots of unrelated Analog or Digital signal streams into one signal over a single shared medium of transmission, such as a single conductor of copper wire or fiber optic cable. Therefore, demultiplex is changing a signal that contains multiple analog or digital signal streams back into the original separate and unrelated signals.

5. Optical Switch: An optical switch is a device that selectively switches optical signals on or off or from one channel to  the other.

6. Optical Amplifier: An Optical amplifier is basically a kind of electronic device that increases an optical signal straight, without needing to first change it to an electrical signal. An Optical amplifier can be thought of as a laser without an optical cavity, or one in which feedback from the cavity is contained.
